Namakhoi Artists Development Programme, Turning Talent Into Opportunity
Ten local emerging artists from the Namakhoi area have successfully completed a targeted development programme designed to unlock young creative talent, with early results already translating into booked performances, original music releases and new income opportunities.
Among the participants is Sherman van Wyk, known by his stage name Sammy G, who says the experience has been both affirming and transformative. “Being part of this programme means recognition, pride, and opportunity to me. It is a platform that celebrates voices from rural areas and places our stories on a bigger stage,” said Sherman van Wyk, known by his stage name Sammy G.
Funded by Kangnas Wind Farm, the Artist Development Programme ran over 12 months, from April 2025 to March 2026, offering a structured, end-to-end development journey for aspiring musicians. The initiative focused not only on creative growth but also on building the tools needed for long-term success in a competitive and evolving industry.
Throughout the programme, artists received hands-on training in songwriting, composition and performance, alongside mentorship in branding, marketing and digital distribution. Each participant produced a professionally recorded original track and accompanying music video, providing a foundation to enter the market with credible, high-quality content.
“The decision to invest in the creative sector stems from a broader understanding of the challenges faced by young people in rural communities, where access to employment opportunities can be limited. By nurturing local talent, the programme not only supports self-expression and cultural preservation but also opens up alternative pathways for income generation.”
The programme also plays a vital role in preserving local heritage and storytelling, ensuring that the voices and experiences of these communities are not lost but instead amplified on larger platforms.
Support for the artists will continue through promotion on social media and radio platforms, as well as performance opportunities at local government and private events. This ongoing exposure is key to helping them grow their brands, increase their reach, and access income-generating opportunities.
